Questo pensionato ha una missione: creare cucce per gatti

Oltre che utile e importante questo lavoro è anche terapeutico per Jaeshin Ha: «Farlo mi ha dato una nuova ragione di vita».

Se diversi gatti randagi possono contare almeno su una cuccia confortevole lo devono a quest’uomo. Lui si chiama Jaeshin Ha ed è un anziano di New York prossimo agli 80 anni. Appassionato di mici, con l’aiuto della moglie, impiega le sue giornate a realizzare per loro cuscini, rifugi e giocattoli. I due sono andati in pensione nel 2019 dopo aver gestito un negozio di abbigliamento maschile per quattro decenni, e ora si dedicano ai loro gatti di casa e a quelli meno fortunati, che possono dormire comodamente e al riparo grazie alle sue creazioni.

I mici delle colonie, però, non sono gli unici ad apprezzare il suo lavoro. I suoi cuscini, particolarmente comodi e colorati, sono, infatti, diventati virali online, specialmente nei paesi dell’Asia. E così si è anche creato una sorta di piccolo mercato con i proventi destinati a sostenere il lavoro dedicato ai felini meno fortunati.

«Creare cucce per gatti ha dato ai miei genitori uno scopo in questa parte della loro vita», ha sottolineato la figlia della coppia Cristina Ha. «I miei genitori stavano ancora cercando di capire cosa fare da pensionati quando è iniziata la pandemia. Così nel 2020 hanno iniziato a cucire mascherine, ma a emergenza finita ci siamo ritrovati con un sacco di tessuto, quindi abbiamo iniziato a pensare a cosa avremmo potuto fare». Da qui l’idea di pensare ai gatti. Anche perché proprio Christina è una cofondatrice di Meow Parlour, il primo caffè per gatti di New York City, nonché presidente dell’organizzazione no profit affiliata all’attiva commerciale.

«Abbiamo iniziato a realizzare prototipi e i nostri gatti li hanno testati. Li mettevamo in varie parti della casa per vedere se i gatti li avrebbero scelti». E così è stato. Tanto che poi “l’impresa” si è allargata. Jaeshin e sua moglie fabbricano anche giocattoli per mici: cuciono il tessuto imbottito a forma di stelle marine, coccinelle e tartarughe e i felini sono particolarmente soddisfatti di divertirsi in questo modo.

@whiskstowhiskers It was nice to help someone else out and to do it gently – to ask if it was okay for us to help, to be able to take the time to walk them through what you are doing, and to be able to check in the next day to let them know the next steps. I get frustrated a lot, probably even more so than I did before. In the time we spent without interacting with people regularly, I forgot how to hide these emotions and I think other people did, too. So maybe the balance is to show compassion when you can. It made me feel better to be nice. And I'm sure our team felt it, too, and so did the cats and people involved. The owner asked me if they could pay for our help and I said no. I told them that as a nonprofit, people trust us to make these kinds of decisions so all the services were covered. We could have done this without your support. Thank you for letting us do a nice thing.
